Movie Pick: Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga
Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (How I Felt When I Saw that Girl) is a leading mainstream blockbuster about an Indian family starting to understanding and coming to terms with the love their daughter has with another woman.
The title of the movie perhaps rekindles memories of the older Bollywood viewers and the memorable “1942: A Love Story” speaking of the taboo love and family rejection during the decline of the British Raj; and the romantic song by three musical maestros Singer Kumar Sanu's voice, Lyricist Javed Akhtar's words and Late RD Burman Saab's composition “Ek Ladki ko dekha”.
Likewise, movie director Shelly Chopra Dhar in her pioneering must-to-watch movie released on the 1st February 2019 unveils another aspect of diversity, sexuality, family life, patriarchy & love. Unleashing another potential of Story telling and minds and hearts changing through art [cinematography], Dhar is contributing towards changing societal attitude towards LGBTQ people after India Supreme Court decriminalised homosexuality in September 2018.
Ek Ladki has the whims and muses of a classic Bollywood story about forbidden love – that happens to be between two women. The story unfolds by showing the failed attempts of family members and friends trying to find the perfect engagement match for their daughter Sweety Chaudhary, a closeted lesbian. The film further develops in Sweety attempts to come out to her religious and traditional Punjabi family and how a male author who fell madly in love with her becomes Sweety’s friend and confident.
Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga marks the reunion, after 11 years, of Anil Kapoor and Juhi Chawla, one of India's popular onscreen couple. It is also the first time the crossover Hollywood star Anil Kapoor has acted with his daughter Sonam Kapoor, adding to its box office appeal. It stars Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Sonam Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, and features Akshay Oberoi, Regina Cassandra, Brijendra Kala and Madhumalti Kapoor in supporting roles.
